We were using the same code for the button in both the public and admin
headers, so we're removing the duplication.
Since the menu and the button must go together, and the contents of the
menu are different for different layouts, we're passing these contents
using a block.
Note the ID of the menu was `responsive-menu` in the public section but
`responsive_menu` in the admin section. Since we usually use underscores
for IDs and dashes for classes, we're keeping the one with the
underscore.
We were using `Setting["url"]` to verify the content belonged to the
application URL, but we can use `root_url` instead.
Note that means we need to include the port when filling in forms in the
tests, since in tests URL helpers like `polymorphic_url` don't include
the port, but a port is automatically added when actually making the
request.
By using the Rails `button_to` helper (which generates a form), and adapting the
response to `html` and `js` formats, the feature works with or without javascript
enabled.
We were doing a `mappable.map_location` call in an `expect` which might
result in a database queries. Doing database queries in a test after the
process running the browser has started might result in exceptions while
running our test suite.
This way we don't have to write `"spec/fixtures/files"` every time.
Note this method isn't included in factories. We could include it like
so:

However, I'm not sure about the possible side effects, and since we only
use attachments in a few factories, there isn't much gain in applying
the monkey-patch.
Defining a behavior on hover means making it different for people using
a keyboard or a touchscreen (most of the population, nowadays).
In this case, we had an accessibility issue where the message wouldn't
disappear once it appeared. That meant that, after tabbing through all
the links and buttons in, for instance, the debates index, the page
would be filled with "participation not allowed" messages, and in order
to see the information about how many people have voted, reloading the
page was required.
For touchscreen users the behavior was similar to what we get on hover,
although we've found some inconsistencies when trying to support several
elements on the same page.
We think in proposals it makes sense to hide the "support" button when
users click on it, and the same applies to the buttonsto support and
vote investment projects. However, we aren't hiding the buttons to
agree/disagree with a debate in order to keep the information about the
current number of people agreeing and disagreeing visible.
Note we're removing some support spec methods because after these
changes the duplication isn't as obvious as it was in the past.
Hovering over the votes showed a "participation not allowed" message
which was annoying when scrolling with the browser or simply moving the
mouse around the page. Furthermore, it hid the information about the
number of votes, links to show/collapse replies, ...
We're planning to change the behavior of all the "participation not
allowed" messages in order to show them on click instead of showing them
on hover (just like it's done on touchscreens). In the case of comments,
supports, however, there's very limited space in the part showing the
number of supports for comments, so adding this message without breaking
the layout is challenging.
So, for now, we're simply redirecting unauthenticated users to the login
page. If find an easy way to implement a better user interface in the
future to display the "participation not allowed" message, we might
change this behaviour.
As mentioned in commits 5311daadf and bb958daf0, using links combined
with JavaScript to generate POST requests to the server has a few
issues.
We're also improving the keyboard access. Previously, the links were
focusable and clickable with the keyboard. Now we're disabling the
buttons when voting isn't allowed.
Since these elements can no longer be focused, we're adding an element
with `tabindex="0"` so the "participation not allowed" message is shown,
like we do in most places.
Note we're slightly changing one test because now when hovering over the
button on Chrome, the "participation not allowed" text isn't shown; it's
only shown when hovering on the parts of the `div.ballot` element
outside the button. Since we're already rewriting the behavior of the
"participation not allowed" text in a different pull request, we aren't
going to fix this behavior.
Sometimes tests were hanging indefinitely. Debugging shows that in some
cases it's due to submitting a form before the AJAX request to get
proposals, debates or investments suggestions is finished, since having
an AJAX and a non-AJAX request at the same time when running the test
sometimes leads to unexpected results.
In our case, we were having many timeouts in Github Actions in the
branches where we use both ActiveStorage and Paperclip to store files
(based on pull request 4598). I can reproduce it in those branches
running the following test ("Should show new image after successful
creation with one uploaded file"), although only when my laptop isn't
plugged (!!):

Since we didn't have a proper way to know the AJAX request had finished,
we're adding a `suggest-success` class to the element showing the
suggestions when that happens. Then in the tests we can look for that
class after filling in the title of a proposal, debate or investments.
Just for clarity's sake, we're also adding the `suggest-loading` class
when the suggestions are loading.
In order not to have expectations everywhere about the suggestions,
we're extracting methods to fill in those titles in the tests. Note we
aren't using these methods in the "edit" actions (suggestions are not
showing when editing) or in tests with the `no_js` tag (since
suggestions only work with JavaScript).
We take the comment as a parameter instead of the user, since usually
people reply to comments and not to users.
We also remove one database query after the browser has started, since
we can use `debate_path(debate)`. It's also more clear why we're using
`debate_path` in the test; before these changes, we had to enter the
`reply_to` method to realize that we were replying on a debate.
We're improving the readability of the ones we're about to modify.
Using human texts makes tests easier to read and guarantees we're
testing from the user's point of view. For instance, if we write
`fill_in banner_target_url`, the test will pass even if the field has no
label associated to it. However, `fill_in "Link"` makes sure there's a
field with an associated label.
On JavaScript tests, Rails URL methods don't include the port when
invoked from a test, but they do when invoked from the browser. This was
causing some tests to fail with Selenium.
We were using list items with the checkbox role. This is probably
confusing since list items have a listitem role, and so we were
basically using a list with no listitem.
We could add a `<span role="checkbox">` tag inside the list item, but
using real checkboxes is probably easier. We're also adding a test to
verify the checkboxes native behavior is compatible with our code.
Note we're using the "enter" key to toggle the "checked" status of the
SDG. This is probably not intuitive for screen reader users who might
try to submit the form using the "enter" key after selecting a goal.
However, the alternative would be even less intuitive for sighted
keyboard users, since for them these icons look like links or buttons
and they would accidentally submit the form when trying to select a
goal.
Since we haven't come up with a better interface yet, for now we're
following the principle of least damage; we consider submitting the form
against a user's will is less annoying than forcing users to move to a
different field before being able to submit the form.
Also note we can't write `check` in the tests because Capybara will try
to click the checkbox, which is hidden by the image in the label.
We didn't add any validation rules to the card model. At the very least,
the title should be mandatory.
The fact that the label field is marked as optional in the form but the
other fields are not probably means description and link should be
mandatory as well. However, since there might be institutions using
cards with descriptions but no link or cards with links but no
description, so we're keeping these fields optional for compatibility
reasons. We might change our minds in the future, though.
By using real XML responses developers will be able to understand better
how the integration works (the data flow), and the correspondency between
`remote_census` settings and their place at a real XML response.
As `stubbed_responses` methods were removed from the model layer now the
stubbing part should be managed from the test environment code so also
added a new helper module `RemoteCensusSetup` that can be used anywhere
where we need to call the web service.

By default, Capybara only finds visible elements, so adding the
`visible: true` option is usually redundant.
We were using it sometimes to make it an obvious contrast with another
test using `visible: false`. However, from the user's perspective, we
don't care whether the element has been removed from the DOM or has been
hidden, so we can just test that the visible selector can't be found.
Besides, using `visible: false` means the test will also pass if the
element is present and visible. However, we want the test to fail if the
element is visible. That's why a couple of JavaScript-dependant tests
were passing even when JavaScript was disabled.
These tests were supposed to check the link to vote is hidden when users
don't have permission to vote. However, they aren't testing that, since
the `visible: false` option also matches visible elements. The links are
actually considered visible since they're displayed by the browser;
there's just another element on top of them.
Using `obscured: true` instead of `visible: false` solves the issue.
However, while the `obscured` option is true when the element is hidden
by another element, it's also true when the element is not currently
visible in the browser window, so in some cases we need to scroll so the
condition is effective.
In the past, we couldn't use `polymorphic_path` in many places. For
instance, `polymorphic_path(budget, investment)` would return
`budget_budget_investment_path`, while in our routes we had defined
`budget_investment_path`.
With the `resolve` method, introduced in Rails 5.1, we can use symbols
to define we want it to use `investment` instead of `budget_investment`.
It also works with nested resources, so now we can write
`polymorphic_path(investment)`.
This makes the code for `resource_hierarchy_for` almost impossible to
understand. I reached this result after having a look at the internals
of the `resolve` method in order to get its results and then remove the
symbols we include.
Note using this method will not make admin routes compatible with
`polymorphic_path`. Quoting from the Rails documentation:
> This custom behavior only applies to simple polymorphic URLs where a
> single model instance is passed and not more complicated forms, e.g:
> [example showing admin routes won't work]
Also note that now the `admin_polymorphic_path` method will not work for
every model due to inconsistencies in our admin routes. For instance, we
define `groups` and `budget_investments`; we should either use the
`budget_` prefix in all places or remove it everywhere. Right now the
code only works for items with the prefix; it isn't a big deal because
we never call it with an item without the prefix.
Finally, for unknown reasons some routing tests fail if we use
`polymorphic_path`, so we need to redefine that method in those tests
and force the `only_path: true` option.
With chromedriver >= 80, the tests are freezing sometimes, particularly
when the same editor is loaded again.
We don't know whether it's a CKEditor issue or a chromedriver issue. In
the past we've had some errors related to CKEditor trying to load the
same instance twice and we aren't sure they have been fixed since we
could never reproduce them.
It could be a coincidence, though. If we modify the views so the only
content of the `<body>` tag is a textarea with the `html-area` class,
chromedriver freezes even if we only access the page once. So maybe
we're only detecting the problem on the second visit because the second
request is faster than the first one.
Since chromedriver no longer hangs after this change, we don't have to
force any chromedriver version anymore.
After upgrading to chromedriver 80, tests checking CKEditor's content
were causing chromedriver to hang. That's why we were configuring
webdrivers to use an older chromedriver.
Version 80 of chromedriver introduced several issues regarding frames.
Debugging shows in this case chromedriver froze when we used `setData`
and then `within_frame`. Since adding a `sleep` call made it work, we
think `within_frame` was being executed before `setData` had finished.
The fact that `setData` causes the browser to enter the frame having
CKEditor is probably the reason.
Even though the `setData` method provides a callback when it's finished,
configuring it so the rest of the Ruby code isn't executed until that
happens leads to complex code. Using Capybara's `set` to fill in the
editor is IMHO a bit easier to understand.
After this change, since we're using a method provided by Capybara
instead of executing asynchronous JavaScript code, we don't have to
check CKEditor has been filled anymore. The "Admin Active polls add"
test, which failed on my machine without that check, now passes.
If we don't use the `exact` option, tests will pass even if filling in
CKEditor adds the content twice or adds the new content to the existing
content, which has actually happened and has gone mostly unnoticed while
testing several ways to fill in CKEditor with Capybara (particularly,
when using Capybara's `send_keys` method). The problem was detected by
just one test, which checked the original content wasn't present anymore
after updating a record.
I incorrectly used "text" as variable name in commit 2cdc6a1b. In
similar places, we use `label`. We also use named parameters when only
`with:` is provided.
Some specs involving CKEditor were failing sometimes in the Rails 5.1
branch. The reason why these specs pass with Rails 5.0 but fail with
Rails 5.1 are unknown. On my machine the tests pass when precompiling
the assets, which makes me think it's related to the way Rails handles
them, but it might have nothing to do with it.
The only (apparently) 100% reliable solution I've found is to wait for
CKEditor to load before trying to fill it in. After running the tests on
my machine hundreds of time, I didn't get a single failure.
It looks like sometimes, particularly when the first thing we do after
loading a page is filling the CKEditor fields and submitting the form,
CKEditor doesn't have enough time to format the text, and so it's sent
as plain text instead of HTML. This behaviour can be reproduced on my
local machine after upgrading to Rails 5.1, with the test "Admin Active
polls Add" failing 100% of the time.
Checking CKEditor has been filled in correctly solves the issue.
